I began my investigation of food through its visual impact relating to nutrition. As I developed my process, I revised my idea to explore how nutritional balance relates to artistic composition.
The inquiry soon became: How can I find balance nutritionally and communicate that balance artistically through relation of subject matter within the works.
Initial investigations feature the original idea in which unhealthy aspects of a food (glitter amplifying sugar, etc.) are heightened to emphasize lack of nutrition. However, the investigation soon became about composition with piece 4, which juxtaposes the close-up nature of non-nutritional foods like donuts in piece 2. My sustained investigation then became completely about communicating health through centering and lack of health in varied composition. Piece 5 displays this by an off-center, gooey picture of pancakes, which happened to feature a triangular composition. The study then began to explore balance in the picture plane through the use of this triangular focus seen in Baroque art. Pieces 7 and 8 feature this structure, while 8 explores the possibility of emptiness in this seemingly wholistic construction. Piece 9 also uses the triangular composition previously seen in the investigation, but it illustrates a whole meal both artistically and nutritionally. Finally, piece 10 demonstrates an aesthetic balance within the balance of a whole meal. Both composition and nutrition can fluctuate within the pieces, but balance is truly found in viewing the subject matter as a combination of unhealthy and healthy.
